We're Getting Married

As "father of the bride" that's one heck of a response.

Rich proposed in December of 2013.

Usually after a proposal, comes a wedding, right?

We had finally set a date and decided to get married on the beach in May.

I called Tom..."my dad" and told him that Rich and I have to decided to get married and he responded "Why?".

WHO responds like that? Especially knowing that we were engaged, shared a home, blended our family and had a daughter of our own.

WHY.

I'll never forget that.

It's as if Tom is close to the end of his life (whether he is or not, I don't truly know but I do know he's fragile and does less and less as time goes on so it's a matter of time. At this rate he's 71, I can't see him living for another 20 years) and it's as if all my memories of him are just flowing through my mind like a Rolodex.

Have you ever experienced an end-of-life transition? Are these flooding thoughts common?

I'll be honest, ever since he started paying rent it's as if I have disassociated with him and the thoughts are slowing down because I'm not as emotional and have accepted whatever the next chapter is.
